Thirunagai Karonam is a large temple with a 5 tier Rajagopuram at the eastern entrance and a temple tank behind on the west. The idol is made of a stone called Lapis Lazuli. This is one of the Saptha Vidanga Kshetras where the 7 idols of Thiagaraja in different dancing poses are found. Here Thiagaraja is found in the Sundara Vidangar form (Vilathithaanam, Dancing like waves of the sea).

History

Thirunagai Karonam temple has been constructed by the Lakolisa cult which originated in Gujarat and their only other temple in Tamil Nadu is at Kanchipuram. A twin of this temple is said to be in Gujarat. Thirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukkarasar and Sundarar (7th – 8th Century CE) have rendered Thevaram Hymns for the lord here at Thirunagai Karonam.

Legend

Aadhisesha, Ambikai, Thirumal, Muruga, Vasishtar, Agastya, Musukundan, Kalakandan and Chandadharuman are believed to have worshiped here at Thirunagai Karonam. King Dasaratha is believed to have installed a Saneeswara idol and prayed here at Thirunagai Karonam.
