Thiruirumpoolai is a large temple with a 5 tier Rajagopuram on the southern side. A smaller gopuram is seen on the eastern side. Just outside the eastern gopuram is a separate shrine for Sapthamadhar facing north. The temple has a wide Moat on all four sides with Lotus flowers – unfortunately the moat water is dirty denying a beautiful sight. Thiruirumpoolai is one of the Pancha Aranya Sthalams – the others being Thirukarugavoor, Avalivalnalloor, Aradhai Perumbazhi and Thirukollamputhur.  This is one of the 9 Parivara Sthalams of the Thiruvidaimarudhur Temple’s Lord represented by Lord Dakshinamurthy of this temple. The others are Thiruvalanchuzhi (Vinayaka), Swamimalai (Muruga), Thiruvavaduthurai (Nandi), Suryanar Temple (Navagraha), Chidambaram (Nataraja), Thiruvarur (Somaskanda), Sirkazhi (Bhairava), Thiruvaippadi (Chandikeswara).

History

Thirugnanasambandar (7th Century CE) has rendered Thevaram Hymns here for the lord.

Mythology

The Lord consumed the Poison Aaalakal and saved the Devas and hence this place is named Aalankudi and the lord is called Abath Sahayar (one who protects you from danger). Sage Vishwamitra, Emperor Musukuntha and Veerabadhra are believed to have worshiped the lord here. The goddess is said to have performed a penance to marry the lord here.

Thiruirumpoolai is in Alangudi which is about 7 kilometers north of Nidamangalam in the Kumbakonam road.

None locally. Closest advised is Kumbakonam or Mannarkudi.
