Abathsahayeswarar Aduthurai is a medium sized temple with a 3 tier Rajagopuram and a large Courtyard inside. There is also a Mantapa for the worship of Appar (Thirunavukkarasar).

History

Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasar (7th Century CE) have rendered Thevaram hymns here at Abathsahayeswarar Aduthurai. Kandaraditha Chola’s (950-957 CE) queen converted Abathsahayeswarar Aduthurai temple to a stone construction.

Legend

Sugreeva (the monkey king of Ramayana) is believed to have worshiped Lord Shiva here at Abathsahayeswarar Aduthurai, hence the name Then (south) Kurangu (monkey) Aduthurai.
