Sundareswarar Paramakudi is an east-facing temple situated in a single spacious Prakaram. The entrance is through a small 3 tiered Gopuram on the east side. There is a long open mandapam before the Sanctum Sanctorum. The main deity is a large lingam. To the south of the sanctum sanctorum of the main deity is an open space with a small newly constructed hall. Further south is the separate east-facing shrine of Goddess Meenakshi. There is an inner Prakaram for circumambulation around this shrine. The Vaigai River flows north of Sundareswarar Paramakudi.

History

Sundareswarar Paramakudi is said to be an old temple. But the present constructions are all new. Historical information is not available as of now.

Legend

A king who used to often visit Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple at Madurai was tired and decided to rest here. Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and asked him to construct the Sundareswarar Paramakudi temple in the same spot.

Directions

Sundareswarar Paramakudi is in Gandhiji Street in Paramakudi. There is another Shiva temple, an Amman temple, and a Perumal temple also nearby. Paramakudi is about 42 kilometers northwest of Ramanathapuram.
