History

As per several inscriptions found here, Aadhinarayana Perumal Kurumbur was built during the reign of Sundara Chola Pandyan (1022-1054 CE), younger son of the great Chola King Rajendra I (regnal years 1012-1044 CE). The place then used to be called Kurumbil and Kurumbilana Rajendra Srinallur and the Lord was named as ‘Sundara Chola Pandya Vinnagar Emperuman’. An inscription mentions Rajendra I building a new palace in Madurai in 1022 CE along with the temple at Kurumbur after installing his son as the Chozha Pandya. Later during the rule of Maravarman Sundara Pandyan (1216 – 1238 CE), the Lord was known as ‘Sundara Pandya Vinnagar Azhwar’.

Apart from these, there are eight other inscriptions belonging to the period of Jadavarman Chola Pandya (1063 – 1070 CE), two of Kulothunga I (1070 to 1122 CE), two of Jadavarman Srivallaban (1101-1124 CE), one each of Jadavarman Kulasekara Pandyan I (1190-1219 CE) Maravarman Sundara Pandya I (1216-1238 CE) and Jadavarman Veera Pandya (1253-68 CE), mentioning various grants made to the temple including sheep and land for regular maintenance and conducting various rituals.
