Murugan Kundrathur is a hill temple which is reached by climbing about 75 steps. The place was also called Shanbaga Aaranyam in the past. This is said to be the only major Muruga temple in Tamilnadu where he faces North. The lord with his two consorts, but both the consorts cannot be seen at the same time due to their position and the door size. You have to move to each side to see the lord with one consort at a time. When the great saint of Kanchi, Mahaperiyava came here the temple was quite small and he told that without any efforts this temple will become popular and larger, the same has happened in recent times. Kirubananda Variyar, a staunch devotee of Lord Muruga, has rendered many of his sermons here in praise of the Lord. Every year during Guru Pooja day Lord Muruga comes down to the base of the temple in processional deity form to participate in the festival to honor Sekkizhar, the author of Periyapuranam, who was born here in Kundrathur.
