Murugan Thirupeyar is a small hill temple. Lord Ganesha’s shrine is at the base of the hill along with idols of Naagar. The hill temple can be reached through a flight of about 800 steps. The steps are all inscribed with the names and amounts contributed by donors. A small shrine for Muruga facing west is at the top. Diagonally opposite this is a shrine for Anjaneya. Nearby is a small shrine for Idumban. The view from top is very relaxing and splendid, particularly if you go up in the late afternoon or early morning. It is advisable to return to the village at the base before dark. There is a Varadaraja Perumal temple in this village.

Murugan Thirupeyar is not an ancient construction. The original shrine could be a couple of hundred years old at the most. Though historically unimportant the temple is worth a visit just for the climb and splendid views from top.

Murugan Thirupeyar is a about 3.5 kilometers north of Kurumbalur which in turn is 7.5 kilometers west of Perambalur. You have to leave the vehicle at the Thirupeyar village and walk up to the hill and then climb up the Hill which is part of the Keelakarai Reserve Forest. The temple is visible from a distance. This is a remote area, though safe, and it is advisable to return before sunset.
