Parasurama, one of the ten avatars of Mahavishnu, worshiped Shiva in this place to get rid of his Mathruhathi Dosha, the curse he got because of killing his mother. The place is also known as Parasurama Kshetram. Goddess Lakshmi worshiped Shiva here and so this place got the name Thirumangalam. Chandikeswara worshiped Shiva here to get rid of Pithruhathi Dosha, the curse he got because of killing his father, and attained Moksha.
