Thirukunthankudi Mahadevar Madagadipet is a small temple under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India. The shrines of the god and goddess are square Sanctum, circular Griva and domical Shikara on top. The idols in the niches around the sanctum sanctorum have been kept now in Pondichery for security. Around the Shikara are Lord Vishnu in the west, Brahma in the north, Subramanya in the east and Dakshinamurthy in the south. There is also a shrine for Saptamadar who worship was popular in the Chola Period.

History

Thirukunthankudi Mahadevar Madagadipet was built by Raja Raja Chola (985-1016 CE) as per stone inscriptions found here. The temple also has inscriptions belonging to Chola Kings Rajendra, Rajadi Raja I, Kulothunga I amongst others. the ancient name of the village was Kunthankuli and thus the lords name here is Thirukunthankudi Mahadevar. The place was part of Thirubhuvana Mahadevi Chaturvedi Mangalam, now called Thirubhuvanai.
