Abathsahayeswarar Mathur is a medium sized east facing temple with the Nandi facing the opposite direction from the Lord. The temple with a single Prakaram enclosing the Sanctum Sanctorum and the shrines has many flowering plants and some trees offering cool shade. The pillars of the Mantapam before the Main deity and Goddess sanctums have some excellent carvings of Muruga, Anjaneya, Goddess, and others. The temple is located near the banks of a large pond.

History

The base of the outside walls of the Sanctum Sanctorum at Abathsahayeswarar Mathur has stone inscriptions denoting the antiquity of this old temple. We also found a few stone inscriptions displayed in front of a Bhajanai Kovil in the village.

Legend

From the name of the lord at Abathsahayeswarar Mathur and the opposite direction faced by the Nandi, it is interpreted that the Lord ordered the Nandi to go to the help of a Devotee and thus the name Abath Sahayeswar (one who went to the rescue of someone in danger).

Abathsahayeswarar Mathur is 3 kilometers north of Oragadam off the road going to Vallakottai. At Mathur take a right and follow our map to reach the temple or ask locally for the exact location.

Stay and Food

None locally. Vandalaur, Tambaram and the GST Road have a few restaurants. Oragadam is also fine for food.
