Subramanyan, Kannanur is an ancient east facing temple built fully with Granite stones. The temple is partly dilapidated and requires attention. This is said to be one of the earliest Stone Temples for Lord Muruga. There is Maha Mantapa, Ardha Mantapa and Sanctum Sanctorum. The carvings are all beautiful including the vimana. The entrance is from the south through a small Mukha Mantapa and leads to the Ardha Mantapa. An idol of Muruga on his peacock mount is in the Ardha Mantapa. The Balasubramanya idol here is seen with 4 arms – Trisul in upper right hand, Abhaya Mudra on lower right hand, weapon (Not vel) on lower left hand and the lower right hand rests on his waist. He has a garland of Rudraksha and Danda in his leg.
Dakshinamurthy idol is found in sanctum niche on the south side. There is another ancient dilapidated Vishnu temple 100 meters down the road.

History
Subramanyan, Kannanur is an ancient temple and has a lot of inscriptions. The details of the inscriptions are not available to us as of now. The temple is believed to have been built by the Pandyas in the 8th Century CE. It was later renovated by Aditya Chola I (870-901 CE) who also built the Maha Mantapa.
