Balasubramaniaswamy Siruvapuri Temple is an east facing temple with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. Maragadha Mayil (Emerald Peacock) and the Panchaloha idol of Kalyana Sundarar are the specialties of this temple. Also present are beautiful idols of Vinayaka and Annamalaiyar made out of emerald. The Navagrahas here are seen with their mounts. Lord Muruga here is a 4.5 feet tall idol with 4 hands and in the Brahmasastha form. Arunagirinadhar has visited this temple. The temple has a single prakaram in which all the sanctums are located. A large temple tank is behind the temple. Balasubramaniaswamy Siruvapuri is crowded most of the times, particularly on holidays and auspicious days.

History

Arunagirinathar (15th century CE) has sung Thirupugazh hymns for the lord here at Balasubramaniaswamy Siruvapuri. Arunagirinathar is believed to have sung 10000 Thirupugazh songs, out of which only 1330 are available today. In these, he has sanctified 224 temples 9 of which have not yet been identified. He has given more importance to 35 temples and 8 temples have been glorified with 4 songs each. Balasubramaniaswamy Siruvapuri is one of the shrines with 4 songs and an ‘Archanai Thirupughazh’.

Legend

Balasubramaniaswamy Siruvapuri is connected with the epic of Rama’s sons Lava and Kusa taking their Bows (Ambu – thus this village is called Chinnambedu) to fight with Lord Rama after capturing the Horse sent by him during the Ashwamedha Yaga. Since the children (Siruvar) of Lord Rama took the Bow (Ambu + Edu) both names of Siruvapuri and Chinnambedu came into being. Muruga is believed to have appeared in the dreams of Arunagirinadhar and his disciple here. A local lady and a staunch devotee of Lord Muruga had her hands chopped off by her husband who was angered by her devotion to the Lord. Muruga is believed to have given her hands back.

Directions

Balasubramaniaswamy Siruvapuri is about 11 kilometers before before Gummidipoondi in the Chennai – Kolkatta highway. After Karanodai and before Puduvoyal enter the service lane and take the road with signage to reach Balasubramaniaswamy Siruvapuri. Chennai city buses connect with the Balasubramaniaswamy Siruvapuri.

Small eateries are available locally. A large paid parking space is available north of the temple after crossing the Rajagopuram.
