Ambal Perunkovil is a large temple with immaculate huge walls. A rather large 3 tier Rajagopuram welcomes you on the east. This is a Madakovil (elevated floor temple).
Holy Water (Theertham) – Brahmatheertham
Sacred Tree (Sthala Vriksham) – Punnai (Calophyllum inophyllum)
Thevaram Hymns have been rendered by Thirugnanasambandar (7th Century CE) for the lord here at Ambal Perunkovil. Kochengatcholan, who is said to have built about 78 Maadakovils, has contributed largely to the development of Ambal Perunkovil also.
Brahma (in the form of a bird) is believed to have worshiped Shiva here at Ambal Perunkovil to retrieve his original form, hence the name Bhramapuri or Punnakavanam. Shiva is said to have appeared here at Ambal Perunkovil in the fiery Bhairava form (Sattainathar), for the sake of Indra, hence the name Indrapuri. The temple tank here at Ambal Perunkovil is said to have been created by Brahma and hence Brahma Theertham is the holy water.
Ambal is a village about 8 Kilometers south east of Peralam. Reach Poonthottam from Peralam and take a left to reach Ambal Perunkovil. You can visit one more Paadal Petra Sivasthalam nearby, Ambar Maakalam.
