Thirueengoimalai is a hill temple with 500 steps leading to the shrine. The Lingam is said to be made of Emerald. The sun’s rays fall on the Lord around Shivaratri. A practice is to worship in Kadambanthurai (Kulithalai) in the morning, Thiruvatpokki (Iyermalai) at noon and Thirueengoimalai in the evening. A shrine for Sage Bhoga is at the base. The Lord and his consort are in separate shrines here at Thirueengoimalai.

History

Nakkeerar (Sangam period or 8th century CE?) has written a set of songs called ‘Eengoi Ezhuvathu’ on the lord here at Thirueengoimalai. Thirugnanasambandar (7th century CE) has rendered Thevaram Hymns for the lord here at Thirueengoimalai.

Legend

Sage Agastya is believed to have worshiped the Lord here at Thirueengoimalai in the form of an Eee (House Fly) and hence the name of the temple is Thirueengoimalai.

Directions

Thirueengoimalai is about 40 kilometers north west of Thiruchirapalli and is on the Namakkal Road after Musiri.

Stay and Food

None locally. Musiri and Kulithalai have some small restaurants for decent food. Thiruchirapalli is ideal for stay.
