The temple of Dhundubeeswarar, Sengalipuram has been recently renovated and is well maintained. The temple also has a small Nandavam inside with flowering shrubs.

History

Dhundubeeswarar, Sengalipuram temple was built by the Pallava king Nandivarman III in 850 CE and was called Thirukaleeswaram. Rajendra Chola’s commander Arayan Rajarajan defeated the Chalukya King Jayasimha and was given the name Jayasingakulakalan. The Cholas at that time renamed this village as Jayasingakulakala Puram which later got corrupted to Sengalipuram. The temple was converted to a stone structure by Saalikan Gouthaman Thillai Vanamudaiyan of the Kulothunga Chola time and also inscribed his image in the stone here. Another inscription of 13th Century CE by Posala King Veerasomeswaran mentions this temple as Poompozhileeswaram.

Dhundubeeswarar, Sengalipuram is about 3 kilometers east of Kudavasal. You can go from Kudavasal, but it is better to continue onwards towards Thiruvarur and take a left at Pudukudi, a little before Simizhi.
