The original Chenna Kesava temple was in the 17th century CE in the area where the Madras High Court is currently located. The British East India Company demolished this temple in 1757 CE. Due to public outcry, they donated land and some money to Manali Muthukrishna Mudaliar, who built the Chenna Kesava Perumal Sowcarpet temple in the year of 1762 along with the adjoining Shiva Temple in its present location.
