The Deity in Janagai Mariamman Sholavandan is a Swayambu (self occurring). We suppose the deity could have been found while excavating and hence is considered a Swayambu. Nevertheless the Sholavandan area has revealed a lot of inscriptions going back to the BC era. The locals claim Janagai Mariamman Sholavandan to be more than 1000 years old. Historical information is not available as on date.
The goddess of Janagai Mariamman Sholavandan temple has been associated with the Parashurama legend and considered as his mother whom he slayed on the instructions of his father who doubted her fidelity. Upon the request of Parashurama he consented to give life to her and asked Parashurama to join the head and body. In his hurry he joined the wrong parts and she became a fierce goddess who was then subdued.
It is said that it showers without fail on the Vijayadasami Day during the arrow festival celebrated on the banks of River Vaigai near Janagai Mariamman Sholavandan.
