History

Thevaram hymns have been rendered for the lord here at Thiruvilanagar by Thirugnanasambandar (7th Century CE).

Legend

An Asura called Kabithan is said to have worshiped here at Thiruvilanagar. The lord is said to have tested the devotion of a Brahman called Arulvithan by flooding the river and then pleased, guided him to reach the river bank (Thurai). Thus the name Thurai Kattum Vallal (the one who guided to the river bank). He also appeared as a hunter and guided Thirugnanasambandar to the Thiruvilanagar temple during a flood.
