Madurakaliamman Siruvachur is open only on Mondays and Fridays. The Amman idol is about 4 feet tall and has weapons and an Akshayapatra, a vessel always full of food, in her four hands. She is seen sitting with one leg bent and the other on a lion, without the traditional demon under her feet representing her non-furious form.
Holy Water (Theertham) – Temple tank
Sacred Tree (Sthala Vriksham) – Marudham (Terminalia arjuna)
Madurakaliamman Siruvachur dates back to the Chola Period and was renovated by Kulothunga Chola.
Kannagi of Silappadhikaram fame is said to have calmed down after her fury at Madurai and settled here at Madurakaliamman Siruvachur. She is said to have liberated the original deity Chelliamman from an evil Tantric who then moved to a nearby mountain. Even today the Arati is shown to the mount where Chelliamman stays and then in the main temple here.
Madurakaliamman Siruvachur is a kilometer west of the Chennai – Thiruchirapalli highway and about 6 kilometers after crossing the Perambalur road junction towards Thiruchirapalli.
