Meenakshi Sundareswarar Vilathikulam is an east-facing temple with a 5 tiered Rajagopuram at the eastern entrance and a 3 tiered Gopuram at the southern entrance. The temple is enclosed inside a single Prakaram. All the shrines and the sanctums are at a raised level. The entire campus has concrete and tiled floors and the structures are all new. There is a tall temple car stationed outside the Rajagopuram. The temple’s summer festival goes on for ten days as in other large Shiva Temples and is the main event in this sleepy little village. This place is also known for Rekla Race (Bullock Cart Race) and various stage performances including Harichandra, Veerapandya Kattabomman, Valli Thirumanam, Pavalakodi, and dance performances like Silambattam and Mulaippari that are conducted in the surrounding temples. The mostly dry Vaippar River flows on the west side of the temple and village.

History

Meenakshi Sundareswarar Vilathikulam is an old temple built by the Pandya Kings and said to be more than 500 years old. Meenakshi Sundareswarar Vilathikulam was in a slightly dilapidated condition some years back. The entire structure was torn down and a new temple has been built.

Legend

In the olden days, the Pond of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Vilathikulam temple used to have a Vila (Limonia acidissima) and Athi (Ficus racemosa) Tree on the banks and thus came about the name of Vila Athi Kulam.
