Shangumukheswarar Pazhayakayal is an east-facing temple situated in a single Prakaram. The entrance is from the east through a small gate. This is followed by a Nandi Mandapam, Maha Mandapam and Ardha Mandapam. The Goddess shrine is separate in the south side of the main deity and has a Maha Mandapam and Ardha Mandapam before the sanctum. Both the Ardha Mandapams are supported by 16 pillars.

Shangumukheswarar Pazhayakayal is an old temple built in the 14th Century CE during the reign of the Pandyas. There are fish symbols of the Pandyas engraved on the ceiling and wall.
