History

Sindupoonthurai is an old temple that has been mentioned by Thirunavukkarasar and Thirugnanasambandar (7th Century CE) in their hymns. Hence it is considered as a Vaippu Sthalam. The sanctum of the main deity is said to have been renovated about 250 years back and the other shrines about 100 years back. But the interiors of the shrines all look modern with polished granite slabs.

Legend

Sindupoonthurai is considered a shrine of Budhan representing the planet Mercury.
