Viswanathar Pattamadai is a large east-facing temple with 2 Prakarams. Viswanathar Pattamadai is called Periya Sivan Kovil locally. The outer Prakaram is large and has a Balipeedam, Flagstaff, and Nandi. The inner prakaram has a large Mahamantapam in front and cloistered Mantapam all around. Inside are to more Nandis one after the other facing the Lord. The Shiva Lingam is a long and tall one that is leaning to one side. The large Muruga idol seated on a peacock is a beautiful piece.

Viswanathar Pattamadai has been served by the Pandya Kings including Jadavarman Kulasekhara, Maravarman Sundara Pandya, and Maravarman Kulasekhara Pandya around the 12th and 13th Century CE as per inscriptions found here.

Viswanathar Pattamadai is about 20 kilometers west of Tirunelveli in the Ambasamudram Road. The temple is near the government hospital. There are other temples in Pattamadai and we recommend you refer to our map to visit all the temples. Two each of Shiva and Perumal temples here have the same name for the main deity. There is also the Kariamanicka Perumal temple and slightly outside are 3 more temples in Karisuzhnthamangalam. The Village is famous for Mats and other such products. The co-operative society office sells them at the right prices and directions are provided as you enter the village.
