History

Chidambareswarar Sattur is an old temple built and served by the Pandya Kings. Historical information is not available as of now.

Legend

Chidambareswarar Sattur was built by a King who was ruling this area under the Pandyas in the olden days. Flowers were regularly brought from the palace Nandavanam (Garden) for Pooja to Lord Shiva. Once during a severe drought, all the plants withered and only one Arali plant (Oleander sps) was providing flowers. After pooja, the king took one of the flowers and touched his eyes with it when an ant in the flower bit him. The king could not bear the pain and shouted out to cut down the plant. When his servants did so blood spewed out of the plant. The King immediately realized his folly and went to the spot to discover a Shiva Lingam below the plant. The lord of Chidambaram then appeared in his dream and advised him to build a temple there. Thus was built the Chidambareswarar Sattur temple.
