Ambarmaagaalam is a large temple with a 5 tier Rajagopuram at the entrance and a smaller 3 tiered gopuram at the entrance to the inner Prakaram. A large temple tank is seen out side the Rajagopuram.

History

Thirugnanasambandar (7th century CE) has visited and rendered Thevaram Hymns to the lord here.

Mythology

Kali to rid herself of the sin committed by killing two Asuras, Amban and Ambasuran, is believed to have worshiped here. Somasimara Nayanar used to send Thoodhuvalai (a form of greens) to Sundarar everyday. Asked about the reason for this the Nayanar sought Sundarar’s help in requesting the lord of Thiruvarur to attend a Yaga (fire sacrifice) to be conducted by him. the lord obliged and visited in the guise of a hunter and his family which included Goddess Parvati, Vinayaka and Muruga, the four vedas as dogs and a dead calf on his shoulders. At this sight when everyone ran away the Nayanar and his wife stood in shock and fright. Lord Vinayaka clandestinely indicated to the Nayanar about the true identity of the lord, thus clearing the situation. The Vinayaka here is called Achantheertha Vinayakar (one who cleared the fright). The spot where this Yaga is said to have been performed between Ambarmagalam and Ambar Perunthirukovil is marked by a Mantapa.

Directions

Ambarmaagaalam is 4 kilometers south of Peralam. At Poonthottam take the road going to Karaikal via Ambal.

None locally. Closest for food would be Peralam or Poonthottam. Stay would be in Mayiladuthurai, Karaikal or Thiruvarur depending on your travel route and plan.
