Jayamkondanadar Temple, Mannarkudi, is an ancient temple with a 3 tier Rajagopuram at the eastern entrance. The temple has some beautiful pillars and sculptures.

History

Rajadhi Raja the eldest son of Gangaikonda Cholan ruled this place between 1018-1054 CE. He was also called Jayamkondan for the services he rendered to this Lord (to be verified).

Mythology

During the Thirattupal (a sweet made from milk) festival celebrated on the Rohini star day (in May-June) the sweet is prepared and taken on an elephant from this temple to Lord Rajagopalaswami Temple. It is believed that Lord Jayamkondanathar felt that Lord Vishnu may be tired after play with Gopikas and he needed the sweet to rejuvenate. This ritual is one of representing worship of Lord Shiva and Vishnu as one.

Stay and Food

Mannarkudi is fine for food, but stay is not advisable. Udupi Sree Krishna Bhavan in Gandhi Road is a decent place to eat.
