Holy Water (Theertham) – Vettar River

Sacred Tree (Sthala Vriksham) – Vanni (Prosopis cineraria)

Aadhinarayana Perumal, Enkan is said to be as old as the adjacent Brahmapureeswarar temple. This place was called Sameevanam (forested with Vanni Trees) in the ancient past.

Sage Brigu was in penance here for the darshan of the lord. A Chola king arrived here with his army while hunting and disturbed the sage who in turn cursed him to roam with a lion’s head. The king apologized and sough relief from the curse. He was told to have bath in the Vettar River and pray to the lord here. Lord Vishnu on his mount Garuda and Lord Muruga on his mount Peacock appeared under the holy Vanni tree and blessed both. The king was relieved of the curse.

Aadhinarayana Perumal, Enkan is about 15 kilometers Northwest of Thiruvarur in the Nachiyar Kovil, Kumbakonam road and about two kilometers left of the main road before Simizhi. An entrance arch of the Shiva Temple is there on the main road.
