Varadaraja Perumal Sankagiri is an east-facing temple situated on the premises of the Sankagiri Fort hill. Varadaraja Perumal Sankagiri is on the base of this hill. Entrance us through a 3 tiered Rajagopuram in the east. A large common Mahamandapam is in front of the row of the east-facing shrines of Perumal, Goddess, and Aandal. Each one has a separate Ardha Mandapam. There is a gate on the south side with a Mukha Mandapam. Going up the hill to the top is a nice experience and there is a small shrine for Varadaraja Perumal on top also. On the way up to the main Varadaraja Perumal Sankagiri temple is a small Shiva Temple with a beautiful, but broken, Nandi outside.

Varadaraja Perumal Sankagiri is an ancient temple protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. Historical information is not available as of now. Varadaraja Perumal Sankagiri is inside the Sankagiri Fort built in the 15th Century CE by Vijayanagar Kings. This was where the Britishers hung to death, Dheeran Chinnamalai a freedom fighter, in 1805 CE.
