Adikesava Perumal Kazhiyur is a small and beautiful east facing temple filled with trees. The lord is alone in a beautiful standing posture with two tall dwarapalakas at the entrance on either side. Beautiful sculptures and carvings are seen on the walls and pillars including one of Rama Pattabhishekam with Sita, Lakshmana, Anjaneya, Vibeeshana, Sugreeva, Jambavan and others. A pond adjacent to the nearby Murugan temple is said to have excellent water that has been maintained well and strictly by the locals. Vedic scholars and astrologers are present in this village and have migrated to various parts of the world, many of them serving as priests. We were told that the Utasavar idol here exudes sweat drops during ocassions. The processional deity Varadaraja Perumal is taken out to Iyengar Kulam near Kancheepuram annually during the tamil month of Chithirai (April-May). A stone Dwajasthambam is installed outside in the middle of the street where some old houses are also seen.

History

Adikesava Perumal Kazhiyur was built by Srivaishnavites from Mannargudi who migrated here with the idol of the lord on their head during times of Plague or destruction several centuries back. They are said to have been given land to settle and build the temple by the Pallava Kings. Historical proof of these incidents is not available to us as of now.

Legend

Adikesava Perumal Kazhiyur is believed to be from an ancient temple from Mannargudi and moved here for reasons mentioned above.
