Vinnavaram Perumal Kulasekharapatnam is a small east-facing temple situated in a single beautiful Prakaram. Entrance is through a Mukha Mandapam in the east followed by a long corridor. The temple has been renovated in recent times retaining the stone structures and adding some brick structures. The sanctum sanctorum’s vimaanam looks beautiful, though the sides have been covered with concrete.

History

Vinnavaram Perumal Kulasekharapatnam is an old temple probably as old as the nearby Shiva Temples. Historical information is not available as of now. The town had been in existence as a major port town around 1st Century CE as is evident from historical references. The temple has been served by Maravarman Kulasekharapandyan I (1268-1301) and the town was renamed after him. Marco Polo (1254 – 1324 CE) describes the Pandyan port city of Kulasekharapatnam as a city that all the ships that come from the west, as from Hormos, Kis, Aden, and all Arabia, touch, laden with horses and other things for sale bringing a great concourse of people and great business is done in this city.

He was so deeply involved that he ordered his troops to prepare for war with Ravana when the Lord appeared before him and reminded him that he was only listening to discourse and the Ramayana was over long back.
