Thiruthanka is a west facing temple with three tier Rajagopuram, two Prakarams in about three acres of land and a Temple Tank in the north of the temple campus.

History

Thirumangai Azhwar has rendered Mangalasasanam here. Vedanta Desikar who preached the Bashyakara Sidhantham was born here.

Legend

The lord killed the demons sent by goddess Saraswathi to destroy a Yaga being performed by Brahma. But one of them the Asura Maayanalan made the whole world dark. Upon Brahma’s request the lord appeared as a huge glow and with a lamp in his hand lightened up the world. Hence the name.
