History

Kayarohaneswarar Kancheepuram is considered an ancient temple, but the entire temple is newly built possibly from the ruins of the older temple. There are two temples in Tamilnadu for Lord Shiva as Kayarohaneswarar and the other one is in Nagapattinam. These temple are believed to have originally built by the Lakolisa cult that originated in Gujarat. There is a temple in Gujarat for the Lord of the same name.

Legend

Lord Brahma and Vishnu were both taken on the shoulder of Lord Shiva for a dance when they were dejected about their period seemingly coming to an end. Thus the lord here is called Kayarohaneshwarar (kayam – body, arohana – raising). Goddess Mahalakshmi, Guru (Jupiter) are said to have worshiped here at Kayarohaneswarar Kancheepuram. This is also Guru Sthalam. The Kayarohana Theertham seems to find special mention in the Kanchi Puranam for its greatness of providing wealth and wisdom for those who bathe in it.
