Pachaivannar Kancheepuram is a small temple which is considered equal to the temples praised by the Azhwars as a visit to the 108 Divya Desam Pavazhavanna Perumal temple opposite is considered incomplete without visiting this temple and vice versa. The lord here is in standing posture and green, emerald in color and hence the name. Pachai in Tamil means Green. The goddess here is in sitting posture and is said to have the attributes of all the three mothers (Parvati, Mahalakshmi and Saraswathi).

Pachaivannar Kancheepuram is considered as importabnt as Pavazhavannar Temple and must be as old as that temple which goes back to the Medieval Chola period.
Sage Marichi’s questions about the need for Rama Avatar were answered by the lord here who appeared in a green form. Marichi also requested the honor of bearing the lord on himself just like Adisesha. The lord appeared as a Jyothi (sacred light) on top of the sage’s head. The Jyothi also has another story which is connected with Goddess Saraswathi trying to create hindrance to the Yaga of Brahma. Vishnu appeared as a Jyothi and helped perform the Yaga.
