Soundararaja Perumal Somangalam is an ancient temple with the lord in standing posture flanked by Goddesses Sridevi and Bhoodevi. An old Deepasthambam made of a single granite is seen opposite the shrine. The main Mantapa here is built in Kerala style with tiled roof.

History

An inscription dated 1,073 CE (during the reign Kulottunga Chola I) can be seen on the walls of the main shrine in Soundararaja Perumal Somangalam. It mentions that this deity was known as Thiruchitra-kuttatu-Azhwar in the ancient days and indicates gifts and donations to the temple in the form of land and various items for lighting of lamps.
