Balasubramanayan Uthiramerur is an east facing temple with a 5 tiered Rajagopuram and 2 Prakarams. there is a large temple tank outside to the north east of the Rajagopuram. The lord here is about 6 feet tall and looks majestic. The mount of the Lord here is the Elephant unlike the usual Peacock. His consorts Valli and Devyanai are seen together in one form called Gajavalli which is a unique feature. An ancient well inside the inner Prakaram has stone inscriptions on it. A single Vel (weapon of Lord Muruga) is seen installed separately in the inner Prakaram which is said to be the one used by Lord Murugan of Ilayanar Vellore to protect Sage Kashyapa from 2 demons. The depth to which this weapon is installed seems to be unfathomable. An Oonjal Mantapam and Vasanta Mantapam are in the outer Prakaram. A shrine for Lord Kadambanadar is in the north east corner in the visibility line of the main deity.

History

Balasubramanayan Uthiramerur was built in the 8th Century CE. The lord has been mentioned as Subramanya Battarar during the time of Pallava King Parthibendra Varma. Stone inscriptions belonging to the times of Rajaraja I, Rajendra, Krishnadeva Raya, Nayak Kings Bommu and Krishna are found here. Arunagirinathar (15th Century CE) has visited and sung the praise of Lord Muruga here.

Legend

Balasubramanayan Uthiramerur is related to the legend of Subramanya Temple at Ilayanar Vellore who was called in by Kadambanadar of Kadambar Kovil to protect Sage Kashyapa from 2 demons, Malayan and Maagaran. This is the spot where Sage Kashyapa was in penance and the Vel installed alone is meant for his protection from the demons. The Elephant given to him by Lord Indra is his mount here and is installed in place of the usual Peacock.
