Sundareswarar, Durvasapuram is a an old east facing temple with an imposing 5 tiered Rajagopuram at the entrance on the east. The temple has a single large prakaram that houses all the shrines and the sanctum sanctorum. Lord Bhairava here is very famous and it is also locally called as Kala Bhairava Temple.

History
Sundareswarar, Durvasapuram is an old temple. There are a number of inscriptions all around. The details of the inscriptions are not available as of now.
Legend
A King who happened to visit this temple ordered that the Prasadam of Bhairava be given to himself first and then to the people. As soon as he came out with the sandal adorned on his forehead the spot became burnt and he was later afflicted with Leprosy. He realised his folly and came back to the temple and sought apology and a cure. He became cured of leprosy and even today Prasadam is thus not offered here to anyone. Another legend is that Sage Durvasa is believed to have worshipped the lord here. The Lingam go buried in the soil in later days and was discovered by a milk man who accidentally stumbled on a jutting root and fell down. Upon trying to cut out the root blood spilled out and the lingam was found buried below. Lord Shiva killing the demons Padmasuran and Mallasuran is enacted during an annual festival here.
Directions
Sundareswarar, Durvasapuram is about 9 kilometers west of Thirumayyam. Thirumayyam is about 18 kilometers south of Pudukottai on the road to Tirupathur.
