It is believed that when Shiva accompanied Murugan to Swamimalai in order to understand the meaning of the Pranava Mantra from him, he asked the goddess (Uma) to stay back here at Kasi Viswanadar Umayalpuram and hence this village is called Umayalpuram. Another story is associated with a Gandharva woman named Vijaya who worshiped Shiva and obtained Darshan of him here at Kasi Viswanadar Umayalpuram.
