Someswarar Kumbakonam has a 5 tier Rajagopuram at the eastern entrance. The lingam is a Suyambu (self-occurring).

Thirugnanasambandar (7th Century CE) has visited and rendered Thevaram Hymns for the lord here at Someswarar Kumbakonam. The development of this temple is dedicated to the Chola Kings and later kings added to the existing structure.
It is believed that the hanger which had the pot of Amrut miraculously turned into a Shiva Lingam here at Someswarar Kumbakonam. Guru and Chandran are believed to have prayed here at Someswarar Kumbakonam.
Someswarar Kumbakonam is south of Sarangapani Temple and the entrance is on the main road itself.
