History

Imukteeswarar Periyapalayam is an ancient temple probably much older than the nearby Periyapalayathamman Temple. But the historical information is not available as of now.

Legend

Sage Valmiki is believed to have been blessed with the vision of Lord Shiva and Parvati in the Linga form here at Imukteeswarar Periyapalayam. He is then said to have stayed here and built the temple.

Directions

Imukteeswarar Periyapalayam is just on the banks of the Aarani river. Before turning to cross the bridge the small entrance can be seen on the left of the road. Parking is difficult in this small and crowded road so it is advisable to park either just before the bridge or in the nearby Bhavani Amman Temple parking. Avoid festival and function times as the crowd that comes to the Bhavani Amman Temple is very heavy and the road can be choked with traffic for a kilometer and more.

Stay and Food

Annapoorna Hotel adjacent to the temple serves decent food
