Pazhayanoor Thazhuvikozhuntheesar Temple

Thazhuvikozhuntheesar Temple, Pazhayanoor

Saivite

Well, though I don’t believe in ghosts here is a temple which narrates it so convincingly that I even I am writing about it.

God

Thazhuvikozhuntheesar, facing east

Goddess

Anandavalli, facing south

Temple – Pazhayanoor Thazhuvikozhuntheesar Temple is a small east facing temple nicely renovated and maintained and as old as the nearby Thiruvalankadu Temple. Stone inscriptions confirm the existence of the temple from sangam age. Inscriptions relating to the 70 men who committed suicide by the Chera, Chola and Pandiya Kings exist.

Mythology

The temple is associated with a thrilling tale of Neeli and her ghost coaxing 70 men from the village to sacrifice their life for failing to have kept a promise they made to a merchant who had married Neeli and who subsequently killed him as a ghost.
