Varamoortheeswarar Athur is an ancient temple in a very dilapidated condition. The temple is east facing with the entrance in the south through a large 5 tiered Rajagopuram. All the structures are of brick. The goddess shrine is in a very bad condition. The spacious Prakaram is covered with wild growth though walkable. Some of the niches of the main sanctum sanctorum has deities which probably do not belong there. Varamoortheeswarar Athur is in need of urgent attention to preserve it for the future. There are some nice pillars in the Mahamantapa with beautiful carvings. Though the surrounding walls are good the security of the temple is weak as it is in a remote spot and the temple can be entered through a small door in the main Rajagopurm, as we did.

Varamoortheeswarar Athur is about 4.5 kilometers west of the Chennai – Kolkata National Highway. The road to Varamoortheeswarar Athur takes off just before the Tirupati road and a little after Karanodai. Refer to our map below to reach the temple. The road for some distance is difficult to drive in patches. We took the road from Thirukandalam and it is not advisable as terrain was rough and no road in some areas including the crossing of the Kushasthalai River bed.
None locally. This is a remote area and you are advised only to visit in the mornings.
