The temple history mentions having been built by King Gnanavarman who once ruled Woraiyur, but the historical details of this king is not available.
The Lord of Thirupati is believed to have appeared here to satisfy the desire of Saint Gunaseela. Upon his guru’s request he was to go to Badrinath and his mind was in confusion over who will attend to the sevas of the Lord. The lord is believed to have cleared this by requesting that a little boy take care and do the daily rituals. The little boy disappeared after a few days being scared of wild animals and the raging Cauvery nearby. An anthill grew over the deity which was later dissolved with milk by King Gnanavarman on the advise of a Saint. The king then built this temple.
Gunaseelam is about 20 kilometers from Thiruchirapalli on the Musiri road.
