Guruvalapparkoil Gangaikonda Cholapuram is an ancient temple which was in ruins when we visited way back in 2012, but was still retaining much of its splendor. We wrote a blog appealing to people to support this grand old temple too. Driven by appeals from other sources the HR & CE and several other well-wishers contributed a large sum of money to renovate the temple. Today the 5 tiered Rajagopuram at the eastern entrance, the compound wall of the outer Prakram, the 3 tiered gopuram at the entrance of the Inner Prakaram, Courtyards, Vimaanams, and all other aspects have been beautifully renovated and presents a picture of beauty justifying its past glory.  The Dwarapalakas at the entrance to the inner Mantapa are about 9 feet tall and look majestic. There are two more Dwarapalakas at the entrance to the Sanctum sanctorum that are about 7 feet tall. The main deity with Sridevi and Bhoodevi on either side is about 7 feet tall. Both the Prakarams are large and spacious. The Vimaanam of the Sanctum Sanctorum is very tall and majestic in proportion to the main deity. A separate shrine for Anjaneya is outside at the end of the road facing the Rajagopuram. A large temple tank is present adjoining, outside the outer Prakaram in the northeast.

History
