Thirugnanasambandar (7th Century CE) has rendered Hymns on Agastheeswarar Kilianoor. Agastheeswarar Kilianoor was a brick structure during his times and later was converted to stone structure during the Chola Period. Several stone inscriptions to this effect are seen around the sanctum sanctorum. The place used to be called Kiliya Nalloor in the ancient days and used to be a thriving town.
The lingam here at Agastheeswarar Kilianoor is believed to have been installed by sage Agastya. Sage Kanava brought his 2 daughters who were ailing and spent a long time here. The lord pleased by his austerity and devotion cured them. Later Sage Sugabrahma came here with stomach ailments and got cured after worshiping the lord. The lord is said to have given Darshan to Sage Aagstya, Raahu and Kethu here at Agastheeswarar Kilianoor.
