Somanatheeswarar Somandarkudi was built by Parantaka Chola during the 10th Century CE.
Legend
Chandra (Soman) to rid himself of a curse is said to have bathed in the river Gomukhi and performed a penance in the Nandavanam (holy garden) and received the blessings of the lord here at Somanatheeswarar Somandarkudi. Hence the name of the lord is Somanatheeswarar. Aadhi Shankara is said to have stayed and worshiped at Somanatheeswarar Somandarkudi.
