Mahadevar Kulithurai is a small and old temple situated on the banks of the Tamiraparani River (not the one flowing in Tirunelveli). The east facing temple has a single spacious Prakaram. Just outside the entrance a path leads down to the bathing ghats on the river bank. The outer Prakaram, though not enclosed, is paved nicely for circumambulation. On the northern side of this Prakaram is a huge rock on top of a rocky surface. On this surface are carved several old inscriptions and also small hole like depressions supposedly marks of a popular game called Paandi. The old caretaker lady living there pointed out to a couple of spots where miscreants have burned on and destroyed the rock surfaces which could have had more inscriptions. Below the huge rock are installed several Naagar Idols. Inside the inner Prakaram in a line are the Sanctum Sanctorum, and shrines for the Lingam installed by King Marthanda and the shrine for Narayana Perumal. The second Lingam represents Lord Brahma and thus this temple is an abode of the Holy Trinity of Hinduism.

Legend

Mahadevar Kulithurai is connected with the legend of King Marthanda Varma (1705 – 1758 CE). An old Brahmin upon the vision of the Lords instructions decided to build the original temple and completed it in a single day and night. The king angry and envious is believed to have sent his men to kill the old man. The old man who was always carrying his sword was ever cautious and eluded them. One day when he was performing rites for his late mother he kept the sword down and was slain by the Kings men. This brought down the wrath (Brahmahathi Dhosham) of the creator, Brahma on the King and realizing this he came to repent and installed the second Lingam representing Lord Brahma.
