Kanthalingeswarar Thenneri is an ancient temple under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India. Only the sanctum sanctorum of the main deity is present along with the Nandi and Balipeedam. The campus is large and well protected and maintained. The Dwarapalakars carved on either side of the doorway are large in size.

Stone inscriptions found here at Kanthalingeswarar Thenneri mention donations made by many Chola and other kings. They also mention the procedures of election, formation of village committee, members eligibility and administrative process.
Kanthalingeswarar Thenneri is said to have been built by Sembiyan Madhevi, wife of Kandarathitha Cholan, in memory of her deceased son Uthama Cholan.
Kanthalingeswarar Thenneri is 9 kilometers south of Sunguvarchathiram (in the Chennai to Bangalore highway before Kancheepuram) and in the eastern fringes of Thenneri village.
