Kailasanadar Uthiramerur is an ancient east facing temple with a grand and tall Vimaanam on top of the Sanctum Sanctorum. The Shiva Lingam is large and the sanctums outer base are full of stone inscriptions. A Somaskanda image is depicted behind the main deity. A small passage is present for circum-ambulation inside the sanctum. The dilapidated temple was taken up and renovated by REACH Foundation.

History

Kailasanadar Uthiramerur has several inscriptions from the Chola Era including Rajaraja, Rajendra, Nayak Kings and Krishnadevara of Vijayanagar Empire. The temple goes back to the Pallava Era and could have been built by Dantivarma Pallava in the 8th Century CE using bricks, later converted to stone by the Cholas.
