It is said that when Thirugnanasambandar (7th Century CE) visited the nearby Dhenupureeswarar Temple he also visited Kothandaramaswamy Patteeswaram temple and was offered a silk shawl. This ritual (Muthu Pandal Utsav) is followed today also on a particular day.
Sage Shaliar who belonged to the silk weavers community wanted Lord Rama to permanently pardon them from the sin of killing countless silkworms and performed a penance here at Kothandaramaswamy Patteeswaram. The Lord granted pardon from the sin to the community. Lord Rama to wash away one of the sins (Shayahati dosha) due to killing Ravana is believed to have performed rituals in the Shiva Temple nearby and hence this temple is also in the same locality.
