Thirumangai Azhwar (8th century CE) and Thirumazhisai Azhwar (circa 5th – 10th Century CE) have rendered Mangalasaasanam for the lord here at Thiruvallur.
The lord appeared in the form of a common man in front of Saint Saliyothira who was in penance asking for food and a place to sleep. The lord relaxed in the place shown by the saint and continues to be present in the form of Veeraragava Perumal here at Thiruvallur.
Thiruvallur is 45 kilometers from Chennai and reachable from Poonamallee via Tirumazhisai or from Ambattur via Thirunindravur. Combine with a few other temples in both routes as there are many ancient temples around.
There are many lodges at Thiruvallur, but it is advisable to stay in Chennai. Hotel Arjuna, near the temple, is a good place for food.
